Warning: Discussion of violence and sexual assault
Using 2007 National Crime Victimization Survey data, BJS estimates that about one third (34%) of the crimes against persons with or without a disability in 2007 were serious violent crimes (rape/sexual assault, robbery, or aggravated assault). Persons with disabilities were victims of about 47,000 rapes. Rates of rape and sexual assault were more than twice those for people without disabilities. Youth with a disability ages 12 to 19 experienced violence at nearly twice the rate as those without a disability. People with cognitive disabilities had a higher risk of violent victimization than persons with any other type of disability. Nearly 1 in 5 violent crime victims with a disability believed that they became a victim because of their disability.

A new school has opened in Phoenix that’s the first of its kind in Arizona - a high school designated for LGBT students.
Q High is one of only a few schools in the country that are made to cater to LGBT students who, for whatever reason, don’t feel right or safe or respected in previous high schools. Many students who go to these schools have been bullied for their sexuality and are looking for a safe haven.
The school offers classes online during the day while its physical building serves as a youth center for LGBT students, offering resources like “a class on coming out.” 14 students are currently enrolled, with room for 25 total.
“For me personally, it’s about creating a safe space for our youth to feel welcome,” said Q High Program Coordinator Kado Stewart. “We’re offering an alternative to students who do not feel safe at (traditional) schools.”
What do you think of this? Good idea? Bad idea? Neutral idea?
I personally really like this concept. I see nothing wrong with the idea: people go to private high schools and online high schools all the time for various reasons. Not feeling safe is a hindrance to the learning process, so in a way, this is just an equal opportunity for children who don’t feel safe in their regular high school.
And look at her now! :D

From left to right:
I am afraid to hold my boyfriend’s hand.
My friend’s parents sent her away.
I found death threats in my locker.
I submitted to electroshock therapy.
I lost half my friends after coming out.
My grandmother sends me hate mail.
My school won’t let me take my date to prom.
I am not here anymore.
My dad tried to beat it out of me.
No one is proud of me.
(That’s all for today. Have a safe weekend, everyone. See you Monday.)
END BULLYING TODAY.
Lady Gaga’s new anti-bullying charity, the Born This Way Foundation, will launch at Harvard University today at 4pm EST.
The event will stream live here. Gaga and her mother will “unveil” the foundation before guests like Oprah, Deepak Chopra and David Burtka, among others. The foundation has partnered with assorted Harvard groups to provide resources for youth empowerment, confidence building and fighting bullying.
Ironically, a group of Harvard students will be protesting at the school, demanding that Harvard officials own up to a secret court from the 1920s that expelled students for being gay or being perceived as gay. Students want Harvard to award posthumous degrees to seven expelled students and shut down the court, which apparently still exists.
Man, if only I could hang around Harvard for the day just to watch all this! Harvard-area readers, feel free to email me photos of the various events!
